about

I’m releasing the song En plein cœur mai today, November 16th 2022, to commemorate 137 years since Métis leader Louis Riel’s hanging. En plein coeur mai is a song that is so dear to me, a song that I composed to a poem written by Jean-Marc Dalpé in 2017 while we were working on Gabriel Dumont’s Wild West Show. The song speaks of the Resistance at Batoche in May 1885 and honours all those who lead the Métis Resistance at Red River, Batoche and throughout the North-West.
lyrics
Translation:
It’s in the heart of May
On the Saskatchewan River
That Li Gens Libres, The Bois-Brûlés
Took up arms to defend themselves
In the heart of May
When everything blooms
On the banks of the Saskatchewan
Red blood of the Métis stains the prairie
Where hay, wheat and oats should’ve grown
In the heart of May, one hundred years later
Blood shed by the Goddams
Myself, Métis, I still remember
On the banks of the Saskatchewan
On the banks of the Saskatchewan
In the heart of May we took up arms
We fought against the Goddams
On the Saskatchewan River
On the banks of the Saskatchewan
In the heart of May we took up arms
We fought against the Goddams
On the Saskatchewan River
